An “online” photo editor usually sends your image to a server. That may be acceptable for ordinary pictures, but it is a poor default when the photo contains an ID card, medical document, child’s face, home address, license plate, or other private information.
Redact Sensitive Info runs inside your browser instead. Your image pixels stay on your device while you load, edit, and export the photo.
Redact a photo online in three steps
- Open the tool and choose, drag, paste, or link your photo.
- Enable box mode and draw over every detail that should not appear in the shared copy.
- Download the redacted PNG and inspect it before posting or sending it.
The export is a fresh canvas-rendered PNG. This permanently replaces the covered pixels and does not copy the source photo’s EXIF metadata, including embedded GPS coordinates, camera model, or capture time.
What to redact in a photo
Scan the entire frame, including the background. Useful targets include:
- Faces of children, bystanders, patients, or customers
- Vehicle license plates and parking permits
- House numbers, street signs, and recognizable addresses
- ID cards, badges, boarding passes, and prescription labels
- Computer screens, mail, paperwork, and whiteboards
- QR codes, barcodes, serial numbers, and tracking labels
- Reflections in mirrors, windows, screens, and polished surfaces
Context can identify someone even when their name is hidden. A school logo, distinctive workplace, appointment date, or visible neighborhood may be enough to connect the photo to a person.
Redaction and metadata solve different problems
Visible redaction protects what someone can see in the image. Metadata removal protects information stored alongside the image. A photo can look anonymous while still carrying latitude and longitude coordinates from the camera.
The tool addresses both in the downloaded copy: solid boxes replace visible pixels, and the fresh PNG does not inherit the original EXIF block. Keep the original private, because only the newly exported copy has these changes.
Use permanent redaction for high-risk details
Cropping can work when the sensitive object is safely outside the remaining frame, but crops may be reversible in some editing formats. Blur and pixelation can preserve recognizable patterns. For details that truly must disappear, an opaque box is the clearest option.
