how to redact a license plate in a photo.

Safely cover a license plate before posting a vehicle photo using permanent, browser-only image redaction.

A license plate is designed to be readable at a distance. Modern phone cameras preserve enough detail that a plate which looks small in a social-media preview may be perfectly clear in the original upload.

If you do not want the plate associated with a sale listing, travel post, workplace, or home, redact it before uploading the image.

How to cover a license plate permanently

  1. Load the vehicle photo in the free browser-based redaction tool. The photo is handled locally and is never uploaded by the editor.
  2. Press B to enable box mode.
  3. Draw a box over the full plate, including all characters and registration stickers.
  4. Check the image for a second plate, a reflection, or another vehicle in the background.
  5. Download the PNG and open that exported file to verify the result.

The solid box is burned into the new image’s pixels. It is not a removable overlay, and the export does not copy the original photo’s GPS or EXIF metadata.

Cover more than the plate number

A careful redaction includes the full plate area rather than only the central characters. State or country markings, registration stickers, specialty designs, and partial numbers can still narrow down a vehicle.

Inspect these areas too:

  • Front and rear plates if both are visible
  • Plates reflected in mirrors, windows, or bodywork
  • Windshield permits, parking passes, and VIN plates
  • Dealership stickers and fleet identification numbers
  • House numbers, street signs, and workplace signage
  • Faces of passengers and bystanders

Should you blur a license plate?

Blur is visually subtle, but it retains a transformed version of the plate. With a predictable character set and enough source resolution, weak blur or pixelation may leave the number recognizable or recoverable.

A fully opaque box is less decorative but more decisive: it replaces the pixels containing the plate. Use it when privacy matters more than preserving the appearance of the photograph.

Verify the image at full resolution

Social platforms often show a reduced preview while retaining or generating larger versions. Inspect your downloaded file at 100% zoom before posting it. Make sure no character edge or registration sticker remains outside the redaction.
